Shakespeare conference draws visitors by Laura Peters


STAUNTON — For seven years, hundreds of out-of-towners have been flocking to the American Shakespeare Center’s biennial Blackfriars Conference.

Some even make Staunton their permanent home later, said Christina Sayer Grey, marketing manager at ASC.

Two conference attendees purchased homes in Staunton after finishing a conference some years ago, she added.

More than 250 people have come from 39 states, Guam and six foreign countries — the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Chile, Taiwan and Japan — to be presenters or attendees at this year’s conference.

The conference focuses on combining scholarship and stagecraft, using the talents of the center’s actors to illustrate points about the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, a release said.
